Puerto Escondido map - airport, town, beachesThe Puerto Escondido airport is located about 10 minutes taxi ride north-west of the main tourist strip and should only cost about $30 pesos to the hotels - depending on how many surfboards you might have. View the map of the airport, surf coastline & key surfing spots.

The real estate prices have been climbing steadily in recent years, yet the hotels & rentals are still well priced. Surfers should really enjoy the great food at the beach cafes.

All types of people come to Puerto Escondido, often to surf, go sport fishing, relax on the warm beaches, swim in the surf & have a great winter vacation in Mexico. They always leave with a few gifts from the local stores.

Travellers Tips

Most people arrive in Puerto Escondido via bus or plane. The airport code is PXM and there is only one flight in and out each day arriving around 4pm from Mexico city — a 45 minute flight on a Click airplane. It is normal for your luggage to be checked all the way through and hopefully it will arrive with you. There are two main bus terminals — one near the main traffic lights at the bottom of the town and the other bus terminal for tourists is at the of the town — not too far from the Mercado (shopping area).

Getting around the town you can use taxis or "collectivos". $20 pesos is the going rate for a ride in a taxi. If the driver asks for much more than $30 and you think the price is too high you can ask to view the tariff card which sets out the prices for various destinations. Squashing into the collectivos will set you back about $5 pesos but you need to get the right collectivo as they have particular routes they follow. Walking around is not really a good option as it normally too hot.

There are many great places to eat at so find one where many others are eating and you should be fine. For much of the year there is no shortage of accomodation so you can "shop-around" until you find a place you like. At Christmas and Easter (the week before Good Friday) there is a HUGE influx of tourists (mostly Mexicans) so prices and availabilty of everything is higher than normal.

Since Puerto Escondido is a favourite Mexico vacation destination, a destination for avid surfers, experienced bodyboarders or those wanting to learn to surf and other tourists so there are plenty of lodgings to suit all tastes and budgets.
